TOPIC: HOW THE STATE-ISSUED PACKET WORKS

This video is about how to fill out voter registration packets efficiently and accurately. Here are some tips and tricks to save time while ensuring that the packets are filled out correctly

  • Never touch a voters signature box on any packet

  • If a registered voter has already filled out their information on the first packet, they don't need to fill it out again on subsequent packets for the same candidates

  • You can fill out other information on the packets for the voter, such as their printed name, address, and date of birth

  • If a husband and wife live at the same address, the wife can use ditto marks to indicate that her address and date information is the same as the husband's or other voters within the household

  • You can write the date of signature at the top of the page and then use an arrow to indicate that it applies to all signatures on the page

  • At the end of the night, you can review the packets and make sure that the addresses are written legibly

By following these tips, you can save time and ensure that the voter registration packets are filled out correctly. This will help to ensure that the registered voter's vote counts

TOPIC: WHAT IS SB-54 AND WHY YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT IT

The video focuses on signature gathering in Utah and the legislation that makes it possible

  • Senate Bill 54, passed in 2014, grants Utah the authority to collect signatures for candidates to qualify for the ballot

  • This process is in line with the practices of several other states, including California and Colorado

  • In Utah Caucus and Convention serve as alternative methods for candidates to secure a spot on the ballot

  • Be prepared to deliver this simple message to voters on the door in case they ask

TOPIC: HOW TO REQUEST AND MANAGE YOUR AREA

This video is about managing your area as a canvasser for Gather. There are five different office locations in Utah and each area is divided into neighborhoods and then even smaller areas consisting of up to 300 voters

  • Area requests should be submitted at least 24 hours in advance to avoid running out of area to work on

  • Don’t be the person that creates an emergency for others because you didn’t request ahead of time

  • Canvassers should aim to get at least 30% of the people in their area to sign their packets before moving on to another area

  • Head Office will be checking these ratios before assigning new area

  • If you don’t have enough signatures from an area, you will not be assigned a new one

  • Remember to be responsible with the areas you are assigned

TOPIC: NIGHTLY REPORTING AND PAY CHECKS

Nightly reporting is required and should be done before leaving your area for the night. It involves sending a text message with the following information

  • The hour you worked (e.g., started at 5, finished at 8:30)

  • The number of signatures gathered for each candidate you're working with (e.g., David 41, Bobbly 42, Steve 42)

This reporting is crucial for your pay, which is based on the number of validated signatures you collect. Gather pays every other Friday, and you'll get paid 70% of the value of the signatures gathered for the previous two weeks. The remaining percentage will be sent to you at the end of the Signature Collection season (around March or April)

To make sure you get paid as much as possible, make sure your packets are legible, the back page is filled out, and you never touch the signature box. These things will increase the validation rate of your packets

TOPIC: WEEKLY SCHEDULE AND HOW TO SET YOUR HOURS

This video is about the importance of weekly scheduling

  1. Communication: By knowing your working days, David, Bryson, and Brandon can effectively communicate with you and expect nightly reports from you

  2. Goal setting: Having a weekly schedule sets a goal for you and helps you commit to specific tasks for the week

Here's the process

  • Every Sunday morning, we’ll send you a Google form to schedule your working days for the coming week

  • Filling out the form helps Gather know how many hours to expect from you and plan staffing accordingly

  • This efficient scheduling ensures smooth campaign progress and helps get candidates on the ballot quickly

TOPIC: ABOVE ALL ELSE - ETHICS AND INTEGRITY

The video highlights the significance of honesty and integrity when working with Gather

  • Forgery is emphasized as a serious offense, and Gather has a zero-tolerance policy for it

  • The video explains Gather's process for handling potential forgery cases

  • If inconsistencies are detected in a packet, Gather initiates a conversation with the individual involved to allow them to explain the situation

  • If the inconsistencies are determined to be intentional, the case is referred to the state and county for further investigation and possible prosecution

  • The speaker underscores the importance of honesty and integrity and urges viewers to do the right thing

  • Forgery of signatures is stressed as a serious offense with potential legal consequences, Gather takes such matters very seriously

TOPIC: STACKING CANDIDATE PACKETS

The video addresses the process of collecting signatures for multiple candidates in the same area during petitioning season

  • Multiple packets on a clipboard may be necessary, especially when a candidate, such as a governor, overlaps with smaller Senate races in the same region

  • Larger statewide races, like Governor or Senator, may overlap with smaller ones like County Commissioner

  • The Encanvasser app will identify the candidates to collect signatures for in each specific area

  • It's crucial to avoid collecting the wrong signatures

  • Some days may involve dropping candidates, while other days may require picking up new candidates based on the required number of signatures

  • You must pay attention to the texting app to stay up to date on announcements, ensuring that signatures are collected for the correct candidates in the designated area

TOPIC: COMMON CHALLENGES YOU’LL ENCOUNTER

The video discusses common challenges faced in a door-to-door signature gathering job, particularly in winter, listing 9 challenges

  1. Making the initial pitch at the first and second doors

  2. Dealing with phone battery issues in cold weather

  3. Dressing appropriately for winter conditions

  4. Starting shifts later (around 3-4 pm) and missing prime time (5-7 pm)

  5. Handling discouragement when no one answers the door

  6. Setting signature goals to avoid discouragement

  7. Reading the neighborhood to identify houses where people are likely to be home

  8. Targeting houses with signs of occupancy in later hours (3-8 pm)

  9. The most crucial challenge: increasing opportunities to speak with people and gather more signatures

TOPIC: REFERRING YOUR FRIENDS AND BONUS MONEY

  • Incentives are offered for those who successfully bring in new recruits

  • Gather is consistently seeking new team members

TOPIC: PITCH AND PRESENCE

There are a few things you can do to optimize your pitch and presence while on the doors

  • Stand back a few steps and turn sideways when knocking to avoid looking threatening

  • Introduce yourself, mention you're collecting signatures for a candidate, and clarify it's not an endorsement

  • Avoid entering residences to maintain efficiency

  • Carry multiple pens in case one runs out during signatures

  • If multiple voters are indicated, ask the other voters to come to the door so they can also sign

  • Be polite but persistent, avoiding extended conversations. Never argue with anyone, just walk away

  • Goal: Collect signatures, not force support. Thank residents and move on if objections arise

  • Emphasize professionalism, courtesy, and efficiency for increased success

TOPIC: EXAMPLE PITCH ONE

This video highlights a typical conversation between you and a voter

TOPIC: EXAMPLE PITCH TWO

Another example of a pitch on the door between you and a voter

TOPIC: COMMON OBJECTIONS AND PRO TIPS

Here are some of the common objections and how to overcome them

  • People are in a hurry: Briefly explain that you just need a signature and that you're not selling anything. Let them know you're a Republican if they are

  • No soliciting signs: Politely explain that you're not soliciting and that you're just collecting signatures for Republican candidates

  • People ask if you get paid: Be honest and say that you do get paid, but emphasize that you're also helping the community

  • Voters think you're a volunteer: Be honest if they ask if you're getting paid, but don't volunteer the information

  • Voters don't like the candidate: Let them know that you're collecting signatures for multiple candidates and that they can choose which ones to sign for

  • Voters are registered out of state: Inform them that they can still sign, but they will need to register to vote in-state before the election

  • Voters have moved: If the person at the address is a registered voter, they can still sign, but they will need to update their voter registration

  • Voters don't know enough about the candidates: Assure them that it's okay not to know much about the candidates and that signing just puts them on the ballot. Voters can research them later before voting
